April 12, 2024 - تعتزم وزارة الدفاع البريطانية تركيب أشعة ليزر على السفن الحربية المصممة لإسقاط الطائرات المسيرة اعتباراً من العام 2027. داغونفاير المنخفض الكلفة يمكنه إصابة هدف قطره 25 ملم من مسافة كيلومتر واحد.

The MoD said that the lasers could fire at any target visible in the air at around £10 ($12.52, €11.71) per shot.

The DragonFire laser presents a highly economical solution for countering drones. In comparison, the Sea Viper missiles, previously used by Britain to intercept Houthi drones in the Red Sea, were estimated to cost a staggering £1 million ($1.26 million, €1.17 million) each.

“In a more dangerous world, our approach to procurement is shifting with it… our widespread reforms will deliver the latest kit and weaponry for our Armed Forces faster,” Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said in a statement about DragonFire.

The laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) trials involved firing the DragonFire at a testbed at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory’s (Dstl’s) Porton Down range in Southern England.

“The DragonFire laser is a testament to the UK’s leadership in military technology. We are committed to swiftly deploying this cutting-edge tool to our armed forces, equipping them to confront the evolving threats we face,” emphasized Shapps.
