By Phil Bainbridge

U.S. President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr will meet in Manila on April 11 to strengthen ties between the three countries as the Philippines move to assert their rights within territorial waters.

In 2016 the Hague Court came down firmly in favour of the Philippines claims but China has refused to recognise the ruling and since 2013 has been engaged in unprecedented dredging and artificial island-building in the Spratley and Paracel islands, creating 27 outposts with ports, runways and other infrastructure, and maintaining a permanent Chinese Coast Guard presence at Scarborough Shoal.

China claims 90% of the South China Sea, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.
