الحرب الإسرائيلية على غزة - اليوم 143

By Phil Bainbridge

February 26, 2024 - Israeli negotiators are heading to Qatar after the White House announced that the “basic contours” of a hostage-prisoner exchange deal had been agreed.

Reports in Israel say that the deal could allow for the release of 30-40 hostages in exchange for up to 300 Palestinian prisoners, with a ceasefire lasting up to six weeks, during which both sides would continue negotiations for further releases and towards a permanent ceasefire. The truce would cover the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which starts around March 10. Hamas has cast doubts on Israel’s willingness to go through with the deal however.

The Israeli War cabinet has approved the direct flow of aid into northern Gaza to avoid the looting that has taken place en route to the north from Rafah and Kerem Shalom. The IDF also presented plans to the War Cabinet for the evacuation of civilians from areas of fighting in Rafah as it prepares for a major offensive on the last remaining bastion of Hamas in Gaza.

The Palestinian Authority government of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has resigned en masse at the escalating violence in the West Bank and the war in Gaza. The U.S. has been putting pressure on President Mahmoud Abbas to reform the PA to enable it to govern Gaza, and eventually a Palestinian state, following the war.
