خسائر روسيا في البحر الأسود

By Duncan Mil

Virtually bereft of warships in their arsenal, Ukrainian forces have relied on emerging technologies, such as explosive-laden uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), and older ones, such as long-range anti-ship missiles, to hammer Russia’s fleet.

The most recent loss of the Tsezar Kunikov -- one of the largest Russian landing ships -- on February 14 brings Moscow’s losses to around 21 warships and a submarine.

“This is a great achievement and a great victory for Ukrainians,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. “This shows the skills and competence of the Ukrainian armed forces,” he added.

Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) said a special-forces unit called Group 13 used Magura V5 USVs.

The most devastating Ukrainian attack took place on April 13, 2022, when two Ukrainian R-360 Neptune anti-ship missiles hit the Slava-class cruiser Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The Moskva reportedly sank in the Black Sea the next day while being towed to the nearest port, Sevastopol. Half of the 485 crew out are believed to have perished.

Russia hasn’t commented on the missile attack and claims the ship caught fire due to an explosion on board and sank due to stormy weather.
