By Ninian Carter

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has set a world record for total time spent in space, beating his compatriot Gennady Padalka who logged more than 878 days in orbit.

Kononenko, 59, who undertook his fifth space flight to the International Space Station last year, is now on course to reach 1,000 days in space on June 5, 2024 – cementing his record-breaking status.

Russia/Soviet Union dominates the time in space records, with them holding nine of the top 10 spots.

Out of the 50 longest records, Russia holds 37 of them; the United States 10; Japan 1; Italy 1; France 1; UK 1 (sharing a U.S. record).
