January 1, 2024 - January 31, 2024 - Events in January include the beginning of the Republican presidential nomination contest, elections in Taiwan, Bangladesh and Finland, the expansion of the BRICS group, and the maiden voyage of the world’s largest cruise ship.

Jan 1, China: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE join the BRICS group of emerging economies, but Argentina declined the invitation after the election of President Javier Milei.

Jan 1, U.S.: The earliest version of Mickey Mouse, seen in Steamboat Willie in 1928, enters the public domain, but Disney retains the rights to all later versions.

Jan 7, Bangladesh: The ruling Awami League is set to clinch a fourth consecutive election victory, extending the rule of the country’s longest serving prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Jan 13, Taiwan: More than 23 million voters go to the polls. A win for Lai Ching-te’s ruling, independence-leaning DPP would further obstruct China’s goal of bringing Taiwan under Beijing’s control.

Jan 15, U.S.: The Republican presidential nomination contest begins. Despite his many legal challenges former President Donald Trump is favoured to win the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary
a week later.

Jan 22, India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the long-awaited Ram temple in Ayodhya – on the site of the Babri mosque that was razed in 1992, triggering riots that claimed 2,000 lives.

Jan 27, U.S.: The world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, makes its maiden voyage, sailing from Miami to the Caribbean.

Jan 28, Finland: Voters choose a new president as relations with Moscow hit a new low following Helsinki’s decision to grant the U.S. military unrestricted access to bases close to the Finnish-Russian border.
