القضايا المثيرة للجدل في COP28
November 30, 2023 - من المتوقع أن يحضر حوالي 140 من قادة العالم و70.000 مشارك قمة المناخ COP28 المنعقدة في دبي بالإمارات.
Syrian President Bashar al Assad is among those invited to join discussions in Dubai -- an invitation described as “morally repugnant.”
“He should be arrested in Abu Dhabi, not flaunted on the world stage,” Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British Army chemical and biological expert, told Sky News.
Syria says Prime Minister Hussein Arnous will lead its team at the COP28 (Conference of the Parties) summit -- and has not indicated if Assad will attend.
After being announced as the host country for COP28, the UAE government selected Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the CEO of the massive state-run Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, as the COP President.
Considering the COP President’s background and the critical role of the position in progressing the agenda -- especially phasing out fossil fuels -- Al Jaber will likely use climate talks as a platform to strike new oil and gas deals.
Eyes will be on former Secretary of State John Kerry and Xie Zhenhua, the U.S. and China’s respective climate envoys for the countries with the highest carbon dioxide emissions.
Beijing argues that wealthy developed countries like the U.S. should move first and fastest in climate policy and finance.
Washington pledged no new climate cash to the United Nations earlier this year.
