May 1, 2023 - May 31, 2023 - Events in May include the coronation of King Charles III, the training of Ukrainian soldiers on how to use U.S. Abrams tanks in Germany, elections in Türkiye and Greece, and the G7 meeting in Hiroshima.

May 6, UK: The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla takes place in London in a ceremony full of pomp and pageantry.

May 13, UK: Britain plays host to the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of last year’s winners Ukraine, due to the ongoing war.

May 14, Türkiye: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces a major electoral challenge amid a cost-of-living crisis and the struggle to recover from catastrophic twin earthquakes that sparked criticism of his response.

May 19-21, Japan: U.S. President Joe Biden is being urged to use the G7 summit in Hiroshima to reaffirm a U.S. commitment to nuclear
disarmament and readiness for arms control talks with Russia and China.

May 21, Greece: Voters head to the polls in a general election in which neither the ruling New Democracy party nor the leftist Syriza party are likely to secure an absolute majority in parliament.

May 27, U.S.: Henry Kissinger, Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford, and a key architect of postwar diplomacy, was born in Fuerth, Germany, 100 years ago.

May 29, Nepal: 70 years ago Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. Thousands of climbers have since tried their luck, with overcrowding and pollution taking a toll.

May, Germany: Around 250 Ukrainians begin operational training on 31 U.S. Abrams tanks delivered to the Grafenwöhr base. The tanks will be sent to Ukraine by the end of summer – earlier than expected.
