الانتخابات البرازيلية تتجه إلى جولة الإعادة

By Ninian Carter

Brazil’s presidential election is heading for a second round vote after neither Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva nor Jair Bolsonaro were able to secure more than 50% of the vote needed to secure a win.

Both candidates are likely to paint the first round result as a win for them:

Lula: 48.43% – Could not run in 2018 election because he was in jail on corruption charges. He served 580 days before being released after an international outcry called him a political prisoner.

Bolsonaro (incumbent): 43.20% – After opinion polls had him trailing far behind Lula, he will be pleased to have proven them wrong – as he bragged he would do.

The election is causing widespread interest among environmentalists who see it as a fight to save the Amazon rainforest – crucial to world’s fight against climate change.

Bolsonaro has pledged to further exploit the Amazon’s natural resources if he wins a second term, whereas Lula says he will bolster measures to protect it.

Scientists believe further logging could permanently degrade an ecosystem that soaks up more carbon than any other on Earth.

Voters will face the ballot again on October 30 to decide the winner, in an election campaign that has been preoccupied by the trading of insults – Lula refers to Bolsonaro a “madman”, while Bolsonaro calls Lula a “thief”.
