October 3, 1942: Germany’s V2 rocket made its first successful test flight. It had a range of 200 miles and killed over 2,700 Londoners in the last months of World War II

October 4, 1957: The Space Race began when the Soviet Union launched the world’s first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit. It completed 1,440 orbits over 21 days

October 5, 1962: Dr No, the first James Bond film, opened. The movie, starring Sean Connery as Bond and Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder, the first Bond girl, grossed $60 million

October 6, 1683: Germantown was established by the first German settlers in America, mainly Quaker and Mennonite families. It was later absorbed into Philadelphia
