August 14, 1947: Pakistan came into existence, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, satisfying demands for a separate Muslim state on the eve of India’s independence from British rule

August 15, 2021: The Taliban completed a stunningly swift takeover of Afghanistan as Kabul fell to the militant group 20 years after it was ousted by U.S. and allied forces

August 16, 1977: Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, died at his Graceland mansion at age 42. He died from heart failure brought on by the abuse of prescription drugs

August 17, 1962: Peter Fechter, 18, was shot by East German guards as he tried to flee across the Berlin Wall. He bled to death in the most notorious case in the history of the wall

August 18, 1743: The first boxing rules, drafted by bare-knuckle fighter John Broughton, were approved. They introduced a ban on hitting an adversary when he is down
