Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the United Nations to remove Russia from the Security Council after evidence circulated of war crimes in Bucha and elsewhere in his country.
Zelensky argued that Russia should be removed because it holds the power of veto, stating that it was time to reform the global peace-keeping body.
The UN officially came into existence at the end or World War II, on October 24, 1945, upon ratification of the Charter by the five then-permanent members of the Security Council – the Republic of China (now People’s Republic of China), the Provisional Government of the French Republic (now the French Republic), the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, now the Russian Federation), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia has the power to veto any substantive resolution – and has done so almost 120 times. Most recently in February, it vetoed a resolution that would have demanded Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine.
As Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, and has veto powers, the Council cannot recommend the removal of Russia without its agreement, meaning Russia would need to approve its own sacking, which is clearly not going to happen.
