Events in April include presidential elections in France, Parliamentary elections in Hungary, a crucial EU-China summit, and the launching of SuperBIT, a new kind of astronomical telescope.

Apr 1, European Union: EU leaders will use a virtual EU-China summit to threaten potential trade measures if Beijing provides Russia with military or economic support for its invasion of Ukraine.

Apr 3, Hungary: Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is seeking a fourth consecutive election victory but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced him to play down his traditional alliance with Moscow.

Apr 3, U.S.: Newcomer Olivia Rodrigo is nominated in the “Big Four” categories at the Grammy Awards, following the global success of her debut album, Sour.

Apr 10, France: Emmanuel Macron is the strong favourite to win a second term as president, with Russia’s war in Ukraine tilting the
election campaign away from domestic issues and Macron perceived to have shown leadership on the international stage.

Apr 15, France: Three years after fire ripped through Notre-Dame cathedral, work to shore up the iconic Parisian landmark is complete and reconstruction is underway.

Apr 23-Nov 27, Italy: La Biennale di Venezia returns after a one-year delay due to the pandemic. Over 90 pavilions will feature art from around the world.

Apr 27, Hong Kong: The world’s largest and most valuable blue diamond is expected to fetch over $48m at auction. The 15.10-carat
De Beers Cullinan Blue was cut from a rough stone discovered in South Africa in April 2021.

April, New Zealand: SuperBIT, a new and cheaper kind of astronomical observatory, is scheduled to launch from Wanaka on NASA’s super-pressure balloon (SPB) system.
