March 28, 1930: Constantinople, capital city of the late Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, was formally renamed Istanbul. Another Turkish city, Angora, became Ankara

March 29, 2004: NATO formally welcomed seven new members as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia were admitted to the organisation

March 30, 1989: The imposing new entrance of the Louvre Museum, a dramatic glass pyramid designed by Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, was opened
