March 13, 1877: A first U.S. patent for earmuffs was issued to a teenager who initially used a pair of beaver fur pads on a wire frame to stop his ears stinging while ice skating

March 14, 2021: Beyoncé won her 28th Grammy Award to become the most-awarded woman in Grammys history, and the most garlanded singer, male or female

March 15, 1937: The first central blood bank, to preserve blood for transfusion by refrigeration, was set up at a hospital in Chicago. It paved the way for modern surgery

March 16, 1867: Joseph Lister, pioneer of antiseptic surgery, reported that carbolic acid solution swabbed on wounds greatly reduced cases of gangrene and mortality rates

March 19, 1932: Australia’s iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge officially opened. It is the world’s tallest steel arch bridge, rising 134m (440ft) above water level at its highest point
