February 20, 1962: John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth when the Mercury capsule Friendship VII carried him into space for a five-hour flight

February 21, 1972: Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to visit China, a key step in normalising relations and ending 25 years of separation between the two countries

February 22, 1997: Scientists in Scotland reported successfully creating the first clone of an adult mammal, a sheep called Dolly, using the technique of somatic cell nuclear transfer

February 23, 2020: Italy, with one of the highest coronavirus rates outside China, placed almost 50,000 people in strict lockdown, with fines imposed for breaking regulations

February 24, 1980: The shekel replaced the pound as the currency of Israel

February 25, 2013: Park Geun-hye was inaugurated as the first female president of South Korea
