The Boston Marathon started in 1897 with 15 runners. Delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is usually held annually on Patriots’ Day, which commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 at the start of the American War of Independence from Great Britain.
Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa, World Athletics men’s marathon champion, targets his third Boston title after victories in 2013 and 2015, while compatriot Yebrgual Melese makes her debut -- heading competition women’s field, which includes nine lifetime bests of sub-2:22.
The World Marathon Majors comprises six races globally: London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York, with Tokyo promoted to major status most recently, in 2013.
