The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, postponed to 2021 due to the global coronavirus pandemic, will be held under strict quarantine measures to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19 infections in a city currently at a six-month high of rising cases.

However, despite its best efforts, there are a growing number of cases within arriving foreign teams as well as with locally employed contractors.

Teams hit by Covid-19 infections include Australia, Brazil, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Uganda and the United States.

Tokyo entered its fourth state of emergency on June 12, one that is set to run the full duration of the Olympic Games, until August 22 – shortly before the start of the Paralympic Games.

Olympic infections timeline:

Jun 20: Coach with Uganda squad tests positive on arrival.

Jun 23: Uganda athlete tests positive.

Jul 4: Serbia rowing team member tests positive on arrival.

Jul 9: Israel athlete tests positive.

Jul 14: Masseur for Russia women’s rugby sevens team tests positive and is hospitalised.

Refugee Team (which competes under Olympic flag) delays arrival in Japan due to positive case from team official in Qatar.

Seven staff in Brazil team hotel test positive.

South Africa rugby team (21 individulas) in isolation after coming in contact with virus carrier on flight to Japan.

Jul 15: Eight athletes from Kenya women’s rugby team come into contact with virus carrier on plane to Japan.

U.S. basketball star Bradley Beal dropped from Team USA after being forced into quarantine in United States.

Olympic athlete tests positive for virus (not resident in Olympic Village) – team nationality unknown. Five staff also test positive.

July 16: Australia tennis player Alex de Minaur tests positive prior to departure Japan.

Nigeria delegation member tests positive, requiring hospitalisation.

Foreign Olympic worker tests positive – team nationality unknown.
Three local contractors also test positive.
