July 11, 1893: A Japanese entrepreneur produced the first cultured pearl. By 1935 there were 350 pearl farms in Japan, which produced 10 million pearls each year
July 12, 2001: U.S. scientists announced they had created human stem cells from cloned embryos, which could theoretically be used to repair damage in any part of the body
July 13, 1871: The world’s first cat show was held at Crystal Palace in London. In such a show cats are judged against breed standards by a registering organization
July 14, 1881: U.S. outlaw William Bonney, alias Billy the Kid, was shot dead by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, while trying to escape capture

July 17, 2020: John Lewis, a key figure of the U.S. Civil Rights movement, died aged 80. His shock beating by state troopers at Selma in 1965 helped pass the Civil Rights Act
