كلفة عشر سنوات من الحرب في سوريا

By Duncan Mil

May 27, 2021 - President Bashar al-Assad prepares for a fourth term in office as Syria lies in ruins after a decade of war. More than half the population -- which stood at 23 million at the start of the conflict -- have fled their homes.

The UK-based Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has documented 227,413 civilians killed from the start of the popular uprising in March 2011, including 14,506 by torture.

Syria’s prisons also hold tens of thousands of detainees. Of more than 149,000 political prisoners, almost 102,000 remain missing, according to SNHR.

Of 12.2 million displaced people -- 53 per cent of the pre-conflict population -- 5.5 million live as refugees in the region, mainly in Turkey. 6.7 million people remain displaced inside Syria, including an estimated 2.5 million children.

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia calculates the cost of physical destruction at $117.7 billion and the economic damage in terms of lost GDP (Gross Domestic Product) at $324.5 billion.

More than 80 per cent of the population live in extreme poverty -- on less than $1.90 a day -- and the Syrian pound has plunged in value against the dollar, with inflation skyrocketing.

Despite the human cost of the conflict, Assad once more is preparing to renew his grip on power for another seven years.
