April 18, 1906: A devastating earthquake struck San Francisco. Over 3,000 died and 200,000 were left homeless in one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history

April 19, 1971: The USSR launched Salyut 1, the world’s first space station, into orbit. A three-man crew spent 23 days on board, but they all died in an accident on re-entry

April 20, 2006: President Hu Jintao of China made his first visit to the White House for talks with President George W. Bush on trade and limiting nuclear proliferation

April 21, 2016: Pop superstar Prince died at 57 after an accidental drug overdose. Record sales of hits like Purple Rain and Sign o’ the Times topped 100 million over his career

April 22, 1952: An atomic test was broadcast live on U.S. national television for the first time. The 31-kiloton bomb was dropped from a B-50 plane over the Nevada desert

April 23, 1616: William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, died. His works include around 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and other works

April 24, 1915: The Ottoman government began deporting Armenian intellectuals from Constantinople (Istanbul). Over a million ethnic Armenians were killed in the following years
