March 28, 1979: A partial meltdown in a nuclear reactor at the Three Mile Island power plant in Pennsylvania caused the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history

March 29, 1901: Daimler’s Mercedes 35 HP, regarded as the first modern automobile, made its debut. It was named after the daughter of the man who commissioned it

March 30, 1981: U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest by would-be assassin John Hinckley as he left a Washington hotel. Three others were also injured

March 31, 2016: Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid, whose dramatic designs include the Guangzhou Opera House (pictured above) in China, died aged 65

April 1, 1621: The first recorded treaty between the Pilgrim settlers and the indigenous peoples of America was signed by Massasoit, the chief of the Native American Wampanoag people

April 2, 1921: The Irish Republican Army, who wanted to free Ireland from British rule, bought its first consignment of “Tommy Guns”, submachine guns from the United States

April 3, 1973: Motorola researcher Martin Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone. Costing $3,995 and weighing 1.1kg, it was nicknamed “the brick”
