March 7, 1971: Women in Switzerland finally won the right to vote in national elections. One canton, Appenzell Innerrhoden, did not give women the vote at local level until 1991

March 8, 1921: Spanish Prime Minister Eduardo Dato was assassinated in Madrid by Catalan anarchists who fired at his car from a motorcycle sidecar after he left parliament

March 9, 1831: The French Foreign Legion was founded to consolidate all foreign volunteers fighting for France. It now comprises volunteer soldiers from any nation, including France

March 10, 1886: Charles Cruft, manager of a dog biscuit firm, held his first dog show in London. Crufts is now the world’s largest show of its kind, featuring 28,000 dogs each year

March 12, 2011: Syria’s brutal civil war began as a protest after the arrest of some boys for writing anti-government graffiti in Deraa. Unrest spread after the army fired on protesters

March 13, 2019: The Boeing 737 MAX passenger airliner was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes within five months. The aircraft was cleared to resume service in late 2020
