December 7, 1995: A probe from the spacecraft Galileo entered the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter, providing scientists with a first detailed examination of the gas giant

December 8, 1980: Former Beatle John Lennon was shot dead outside his home in New York City. Lennon was just 40 years old, and today is the 40th anniversary of his death

December 9, 2005: London’s iconic red double-decker Routemaster bus was retired after half a century. A new Routemaster inspired by the original entered service in 2012
