November 15, 1630: German astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the principles of planetary motion and pioneered work with modern optics and calculus, died at age 58
November 16, 1855: Explorer David Livingstone discovered the Victoria Falls on Africa’s Zambesi River. The indigenous name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means “the smoke that thunders”
November 17, 1800: The U.S. Congress moved from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington DC, meeting in the still to be completed Capitol building (above)
November 18, 2015: New Zealand rugby star Jonah Lomu, who revolutionised his sport with a blistering combination of size and speed, died at age 40 from a rare kidney condition

November 21, 2019: Firefighters battled at least 200 fires across Australia. New South Wales was the hardest hit state, with the city of Sydney blanketed in thick smoke
