November 9, 2020 - LAST UPDATED 15:00GMT: Democrat Vice President Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election. Victory in Pennsylvania delivered 20 Electoral College votes, pushing him past the 270-vote threshold needed to take the White House. President Trump has vowed to file legal challenges.
Biden, 77, will become the 46th U.S. president and the oldest man ever sworn into the office.
President-elect Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, became the first woman, and the first woman of colour, on a winning presidential ticket.
Biden also won the popular vote with more than 74 million votes, breaking the record set by President Barack Obama in 2012. Trump received more than 70 million votes -- more than the 63 million he received in 2016 when he beat Hillary Clinton while losing the popular vote.
Biden’s agenda in office may rest on his ability to work with Congress. In the U.S. Senate, Democrats -- with the support of two Independents -- and the Republicans each hold 48 seats in the 100-member Senate. The balance of power will be decided in January when Georgia has double run-off elections for its two seats.
In the House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on track to keep control but with a shrinking majority. Democrats lead with 211 to 197 seats with less than 30 seats to be declared.
