September 1, 2020 - President Trump is trailing Democratic rival, Joe Biden, by six points in national polls. However, in many battleground states, he is polling within a plus-or-minus three-point margin of error.

A Real Clear Politics poll over the past week showed that since the two major party conventions, Biden’s lead over Trump has narrowed from 7.4% on August 25 to 6.2% on September 1, significantly down from 11.5% last September.

Both sides acknowledge the contest is tightening into the final phase of the election season. Democrats are attacking Trump as an incompetent racist who is failing to protect the nation from the coronavirus pandemic as he actively undermines democracy.

Republicans are largely ignoring the pandemic while attacking Biden as a senile lifetime politician controlled by his party’s far-left wing and incapable of protecting suburban voters from mobs of protesters.

The closing weeks of the election have seen violence erupt on the streets of Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man who was shot seven times in the back as he walked toward his car.

Coronavirus deaths in the U.S. surged past 180,000 -- and show little sign of slowing. And Hurricane Laura slammed into Louisiana as wildfires in California continue to force mass evacuations.

The upcoming Labor Day, on September 7, will mark the traditional fall kickoff to the final stretch of the presidential campaign, followed by the first presidential debates in Cleveland on September 29.
