August 5, 2020 - President Donald Trump trails presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in all six of the critical battleground states, according to the latest Real Clear Politics poll of polls.

Under the Electoral College system, each state is granted electoral votes in proportion to its population. In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton won 2.9 million more individual votes than Trump -- the popular vote. Still, the president won by a significant margin in the Electoral College due to a series of wins in battleground states. Trump won 306 electoral votes while Clinton only achieved 232.

Battleground states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida and Pennsylvania, flipped from blue to red for Trump. Democrats aim to regain these states in November, along with North Carolina and Arizona.

Of these, Florida has 29 electoral votes followed by Pennsylvania, the next most populous of the swing states, with 20 electoral votes. Michigan has 16 votes; North Carolina has 15, Arizona has 11 and Wisconsin has 10. These states could give the Democrats 101 electoral votes on top of the 118 votes they are sure to win in seven stable blue states and Washington DC.

Biden currently has the advantage in all six swing states. Real Clear Politics show Trump down by about 7.8 points in Michigan and 6.2 points in Florida.

Trump has sought to stoke fears of voter fraud stemming from voting by post, claiming “mail-in ballots will lead to the greatest fraud.” CNN/SSRS polling from Arizona, Florida and Michigan, show at least 56% of Democrats say they’re going to cast a vote by mail

Trump said on Monday (August 3) that he could issue an executive order to stop mail-in voting, despite the Constitution’s expressly giving states the power to run their elections. “I have the right to do it,” Trump insisted, adding: “We haven’t got there yet, but we’ll see what happens.”
