August 9, 1945: Three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a second U.S. bomb destroyed the Japanese city of Nagasaki. An estimated 74,000 people were killed

August 10, 1675: The foundation stone of the Royal Observatory, which has played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, was laid at Greenwich, England

August 11, 2015: Japan restarted the No.1 reactor at the Sendai nuclear plant, generating nuclear power for the first time since the Fukushima disaster in 2011

August 12, 30 BC: Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, committed suicide allegedly by an asp bite to her breast. She killed herself following the death of her lover Mark Antony

August 13, 1999: German tennis star Steffi Graf retired, ending a 17-year career that included 22 Grand Slam titles. She won each of the four Grand Slams at least four times

August 14, 1880: The construction of Cologne Cathedral was completed. Building began in 1248 but was stopped in 1473. After a 400-year gap it was completed to the original plan

August 15, 1945: Millions celebrated VJ (Victory in Japan) Day after Japan’s unconditional surrender ended World War II, a global conflict in which over 50 million people died
