March 29, 1901: Daimler’s Mercedes 35 HP, regarded as the first modern automobile, made its debut. It was named after the daughter of the man who commissioned it
March 30, 1858: Philadelphia stationer Hymen Lipman received a patent for his invention of a pencil with a built-in eraser. He sold the patent in 1862 for $100,000 (around $2m today)
March 31, 1855: English novelist and poet Charlotte Bronte, the eldest of three literary sisters and best known for her novel Jane Eyre, died during pregnancy
April 1, 1945: An assault by 50,000 U.S. troops on the Japanese-held island of Okinawa heralded the beginning of the last major battle of the Pacific in World War II
April 3, 1860: The first Pony Express carrying the U.S. mail set out on its 2,000-mile run from St Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento in California
April 4, 1873: The Kennel Club, the world’s oldest and first official registry of purebred dogs was founded in Britain. As of 2020, it recognised 218 breeds of dog
