الولايات المتحدة وطالبان تقتربان من اتفاق سلام في أفغانستان

February 18, 2020 - A truce agreement between the United States and the Taliban could lead to the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. More than 3,500 U.S. and coalition troops and tens of thousands of Afghans have died in the 18-year war.

The U.S. and the Taliban appear to be close to formally agreeing a seven-day “reduction in violence” deal as a prelude to the signing of a peace agreement to end America’s longest war. All-Afghan peace talks would then begin within 10 days as part of the plan, which envisions the phased withdrawal of U.S. forces over 18 months.

The U.S. wants any deal to include a promise from the Taliban that Afghanistan would not be used as a base by terrorist groups. The U.S. currently has an estimated 12,000 troops in Afghanistan.
