محادثات سلام لإنهاء الحرب في شرق أوكرانيا

December 9, 2019 - Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are meeting in Paris alongside the French and German leaders in a renewed effort to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

More than five years of fighting in eastern Ukraine between government troops and Moscow-backed separatists has killed more than 13,000 people, and a cease-fire has remained elusive.

A major breakthrough is unlikely, but whatever happens, the summit is the biggest test yet for Zelenskiy, who won the presidency this year in a landslide – partly on promises to end the war.

Many Ukrainians are concerned over a possible compromise with Russia, which they see as an aggressor seeking to restore the Kremlin’s influence on the former Soviet republic and ruin Ukraine’s aspiration to closer European ties, Reuters said.
