Russia’s gas transit routes bypassing Ukraine
November 13, 2019 - Moscow’s construction of new pipelines such as Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream will add capacity for Russia’s natural gas exports to Europe while significantly reducing Ukraine’s role as a transit country.
The new gas infrastructure has the potential to hit Ukraine’s economy hard, depriving the nation of $2-3 billion in annual transit fees.
The Nord Stream 2 project has also upset the United States as well as Eastern European EU members interested in reducing Russian influence over Europe through natural gas exports.
