كأس ليبرتادوريس - الدور نصف النهائي - الجولة الأولى

By Chris Dinsdale

October 1, 2019 - October 2, 2019 - The Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition, reaches the semi-final stage with first leg matches taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores feature two heavyweight contests between perennial rivals from Argentina and Brazil, as River Plate take on Boca Juniors, and Gremio clash with Flamengo.

Boca Juniors and River Plate are two of the most successful teams in Argentine football, inspiring fierce rivalry both on the pitch and among supporters, creating one of the most competitive derbies in world soccer. Matches between the teams are known as “Superclasico”. Boca Juniors have won 88 of these contests, River Plate have won 82, and 78 games have ended in a draw.

Meanwhile Gremio and Flamengo meet in an interstate Brazilian clash, first played in 1937. Flamengo -- currently topping the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A -- have won the last three contests, most recently a 3-1 league victory at the Estádio Maracana in August.

In a new format, Santiago, in Chile, will host the first single match final in the tournament’s history. Argentina (25) and Brazil (18) have won 43 of 58 Copa Libertadores titles collectively.
