India to receive first Rafale fighter jet

By Mike Tyler

September 20, 2019 - India is preparing to receive the first of 36 Rafale fighter aircraft ordered in a 2016 deal with France’s Dassault. The multi-role jets will replace part of the country’s ageing air force fleet.

The first Rafale is set to be handed over to the Indian Air Force at a ceremony in France being planned for September, according to The Economic Times.

India signed a formal agreement with France to buy 36 Rafale aircraft for $8.7 billion (7.8 billion euros) in September 2016, with all of the planes slated for delivery by 2022.

The first batch of four jets is expected to be ferried to India by May 2020 and will form the first Rafale squadron at the Ambala airbase, close to the border with Pakistan

Indian pilots will undergo extensive training on the jets in France as part of the contract.
