August 11, 1994: The era of internet shopping began when a CD version of an album by Sting became the first item sold online in a secure purchase

August 12, 30BC: Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, committed suicide allegedly by an asp bite to her breast. She killed herself following the death of her lover Mark Antony

August 13, 1624: King Louis XIII named Cardinal Richelieu as his Chief Minister. He transformed France into a strong centralized state and founded the Académie Française

August 14, 1969: British troops were deployed in Northern Ireland in a bid to quell sectarian violence. Over the next 30 years “The Troubles” claimed more than 3,500 lives

August 15, 1969: The legendary Woodstock Music and Arts festival, at which 32 acts performed to around 500,000 concert goers, began in upstate New York

August 16, 2018: Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul” known for hits like Respect and Natural Woman, died at age 76. She earned 18 Grammy awards in her 50-year career

August 17, 1962: Peter Fechter, 18, was shot by East German guards as he tried to flee across the Berlin Wall. He bled to death in the most notorious case in the history of the wall
