June 25, 2019 - During a three-day visit to New Delhi, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will confront significant challenges, with President Trump claiming India follows unfair trade practices.

* Bilateral trade: Trade between India and U.S. has more than doubled from $37.6 billion to $87.9 billion in a decade.

* Data localization: Washington claims Reserve Bank of India’s data localization rules and proposed e-commerce Bill, severely increases costs for 500 U.S. companies operating in India.

* H-1B visas: Trump administration has tried to reduce 85,000 H-1B visas that allow U.S. companies to employ Indian IT professionals, citing data-localization laws.

* Russian arms: India faces sanctions under the U.S. Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) over a decision to buy four S-400 air defence system from Russia. New Delhi has signed four arms deals with Moscow worth over $12 billion.
