June 30, 1894: Tower Bridge, an iconic symbol of London, was officially opened. Two sections bearing the roadway are raised to allow tall-masted ships to pass through

July 1, 2018: Left-winger Andrés Manuel López Obrador won Mexico’s presidential election in a landslide victory that upended the nation’s political establishment

July 2, 1819: Britain passed the Factory Act, prohibiting employment of children under nine in textile factories, and limiting under 16s to working only 12 hours a day

July 3, 1969: Brian Jones, a founder member of British rock band The Rolling Stones, was found drowned in his swimming pool a month after being dismissed from the band

July 4, 1924: Chef Caesar Cardini, running out of food for his customers, created a salad from odds and ends that remained. Caesar salad was an instant hit

July 5, 1969: Influential German architect Walter Gropius died in New York. He founded the Bauhaus School and is regarded as a master of modernist architecture

July 6, 1919: The first airship to cross the Atlantic, the British R-34, arrived in New York after a flight of 108 hours. The landing party had to jump out by parachute
