إيران ترسل سفن حربية إلى المحيط الأطلسي
February 18, 2019 - Iran is set to deploy warships to the Atlantic Ocean from March, in a five-month mission apparently aimed at countering the presence of American aircraft carriers in the Gulf.
Iran says it will send two to three ships, including its newly-commissioned frigate, the Sahand. The vessel has a flight deck for helicopters and is equipped with surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles.
Iran sees the presence of U.S. aircraft carriers in the Gulf as a security concern and is seeking to increase the operating range of its naval forces closer to the waters of the United States, its arch foe.
The flotilla announcement is likely intended to boost Iran’s military image amid rising tensions with the United States, which in November reimposed all sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
In December, the U.S. deployed an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf, the first since Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.
