December 21, 2018 - Jim Mattis, the U.S. defence secretary, is the fourth member of President Trump’s cabinet to resign or be forced out in less than two weeks and the 40th significant departure since Michael Flynn, the national security adviser, was forced out 25 days after President Trump was inaugurated.

Mattis, who espoused America’s traditional global alliances has generally been referred to as one of the three adults in the chaotic Trump administration, the others being White House chief of staff John Kelly and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Trump ousted Tillerson publicly on Twitter on March 13. While Kelly was hired to bring order to the Oval Office, the retired Marine ultimately found Trump was uncontrollable. Kelly resigned on December 8.
