December 2, 1971: The United Arab Emirates came into being, comprising the former Trucial states of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain and Fujairah

December 3, 1984: A toxic gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant near Bhopal, India, killed over 3,700 people. It remains the world’s worst industrial accident

December 4, 2017: Yemen’s former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was killed by Houthi forces in a roadside attack near Sanaa. His former Houthi allies accused him of treason

December 5, 2013: Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, died at age 95. An anti-apartheid icon, he led the transition from white-minority rule to democracy in 1994

December 6, 2017: U.S. President Donald Trump overturned decades of official American foreign policy by recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

December 7, 1934: The jet stream, bands of strong winds high above the earth, was supposedly discovered by Wiley Post on a test flight into the stratosphere

December 8, 1863: English boxer Tom King defeated American John Heenan to become the world’s first heavyweight champion. The fight lasted 35 minutes and 25 rounds
