September 2, 1973: British writer J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the classic fantasy works The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, died aged 81

September 3, 2000: The controversial Eurofighter Typhoon combat jet, being built jointly by Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain, finally began full-scale production

September 4, 1948: Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who had reigned since 1890, abdicated in favour of her daughter, Juliana. They are pictured above in 1913

September 5, 1698: Tsar Peter the Great of Russia imposed a tax on beards as part of a effort to modernise Russian society following western European models

September 6, 2006: Celebrations erupted in Japan as the Imperial family welcomed the first male baby for 41 years. The birth of the new prince averted a looming succession crisis

September 7, 1813: A New York newspaper, referring to the initials U.S. on barrels of beef for the U.S. Army, coined the nickname “Uncle Sam” for the United States
