More than 20 dead in Greek wildfire

By Jordi Bou

July 24, 2018 - The worst forest fires to hit Greece in a decade have claimed the lives of dozens of people near Athens as the authorities there seek international assistance.

The majority of the victims died in their homes or their cars in Mati, a holiday resort 29km north-east of Athens that was devastated by a fast-moving blaze that started at around 5pm local time.

The government has asked other European countries for helicopters and additional firefighters to help tackle the wildfires, which are the worst to hit Greece since 2007, when dozens of people were killed in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.
