August 5, 25: Guangwu became emperor of China, restoring the Han Dynasty after the fall of the short-lived Xin Dynasty. The Han Dynasty is seen as a golden age in Chinese history

August 6, 1538: Bogota, capital of Colombia, was founded by Spanish explorer Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada. Its indigenous name was Bacata, meaning The Lady of the Andes

August 7, 2015: Uggie, the terrier famous for his role in the Oscar-winning film The Artist, and the first dog to have his paw prints immortalised in cement in Hollywood, died at age 13

August 8, 1788: The first cattle arrived in Australia. Two bulls and five cows were off-loaded in Sydney; they were subsequently either eaten or wandered into the bush

August 9, 1842: The United States and Britain signed the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, establishing the boundary between the U.S. and Canada from Maine to the Great Lakes

August 10, 2013: Kirobo, a diminutive robot designed to talk to and provide support for people isolated over long periods, was launched to the International Space Station

August 11, 1988: Al-Qaeda, responsible for terror crimes including the 9/11 attacks of 2001 in the U.S. and the 2002 Bali bombings, was founded by Osama bin Laden
