This week features Superman,Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Peter the Great of Russia, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the climbing of Mount Everest, the Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlow and the Titanic.

May 27, 1703: Peter the Great founded the city of St Petersburg to give Russia a seaport to improve trade with Europe. It replaced Moscow as Russia’s capital city in 1712

May 28, 2008: Italy’s famous Leaning Tower of Pisa was stable for the first time in its 800-year history following a 10-year operation to move it into a more upright position

May 29, 1953: New Zealander Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tensing Norgay, became the first men to top the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak

May 30, 1593: English playwright Christopher Marlowe, author of Dr Faustus who was a major influence on William Shakespeare, was killed in a fight in a London tavern

May 31, 1911: The White Star liner Titanic was launched in Belfast. At the time it was the largest vessel afloat, but the ship famously sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912

June 1, 1938: Cartoon hero Superman made his first appearance in the first issue of Action Comics, featuring the work of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster

June 2, 1953: Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms. The first televised coronation also hugely boosted the sale of TV sets
