February 10, 2017 - Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams, a pivotal figure in the political life of Ireland for almost 50 years, steps down as party leader and completes a generational shift in the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). He will be succeeded by Mary Lou McDonald, a member of parliament for Dublin who has no paramilitary background and is seen as offering Sinn Fein a way to soften its image.
