December 31, 2017 - Archaeological discoveries in 2017 include the first genetic confirmation of a female Viking warrior, and the revelation that fossils unearthed in Morocco are the oldest known remains of Homo sapiens. The wreck of the USS Indianapolis was discovered at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, a tower of Aztec-era skulls was found in Mexico City, and a large cavity was detected inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. A section of Rome’s oldest aqueduct was uncovered, and a still edible fruitcake thought to belong to a 1911 British expedition was discovered in Antarctica.
