Battle over Lofoten oil reserves

August 7, 2017 - As Norway chases new Arctic oil and gas fields, environmentalists are urging the country’s major political parties to drop plans for offshore drilling around the scenic and unspoilt Lofoten archipelago. About 1.3 billion barrels of oil, worth about $60 billion, lies under Norway’s Lofoten archipelago as well as the neighbouring island groups of Vesteralen and Senja.

Norway’s Conservatives and Progress Party alliance supports an assessment of the archipelago while the Liberal, Christian Democrats and Greens are against it.
