September 14, 2011 - Nearly one in six Americans are living in poverty – the highest since 1993, according to 2010 census data. The poverty rate for children increased to 22% from 20.7% in 2009. For blacks, the number of people below the poverty line increased from 25.8% to 27.4% in 2010 while the number of Hispanics jumped from 25.3% to 26.6%.
