June 26, 1906: The first grand prix motor race was held at Le Mans over 65 miles of public roads. Hungarian Ferenc Szisz won, driving a Renault at an average speed of 101km/h

June 27, 1985: America’s iconic Route 66, which stretched some 2,200 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, was decertified and all its highway signs were removed

June 28, 1997: Mike Tyson was fined $3m and his boxing license was revoked for one year after he bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a world heavyweight title fight

June 29, 1613: The original Globe Theatre in London burnt down after a cannon shot, fired during a performance of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, set light to the thatched gallery roof

June 30, 1997: The ceremonial handover of Hong Kong from the UK to China marked the official transfer of sovereignty after 156 years of British colonial rule

July 1, 1858: Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was first presented in public when his papers were read at a meeting of the Linnean Society in London

July 2, 1853: The Russian army crossed into the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, then part of the Ottoman Empire, instigating the Crimean War
